My doctor said I have a virus not a flu even though I have all the flu symptoms. He also said antibiotics wouldn’t help and he sent me home to suffer empty handed.
Antibiotics only kill bacteria, not viruses.
As there are many named viruses, call your doctor and ask him what the name of the one you have is. Then google it.
You can buy OTCs that can ease your symptoms, at least.
You may want to look for another doctor, who should have suggested something to relieve your symptoms, while you wait for the virus to run it’s course.
God bless and I hope you feel better.
I need to design an experiment to determine if the flu symptoms in a population are due to a virus or bacteria. The procedure should not include overly complex tasks. The simpler the experiment, the better. All suggesions are appreciated.
Not sure how to design an experiment about it, but the first thing you’d need to know is if the "flu symptoms" are actually caused by the flu. If they are, well there is your answer. Influenza is exclusively caused by a virus.
However, a lot of people with colds complain of similar symptoms. Most people you can tell the difference depending on if there are sinus complaints.
Runny nose? Cold.
Fever? Flu.
Exhaustion? Well, could go either way really.
Only in outbreak cases do they actually do any testing for the virus, so you wouldn’t have much luck there.
Good luck though. I’d love to hear about your results.
Normally I wouldn’t, and the student health center at my school is extremely overloaded right now w/ cold, flu, H1N1. But I just returned from travelling in China. Does this fact alone warrant a doctor visit?
I am just now feeling the symptoms coming on this morning – headache, sore throat, sniffles and general discomfort. As of yet I don’t have have a fever.
I know how to deal with the symptoms at home. I am just wondering should I be concerned due to the fact I have been in China?
i wouldn’t bother — if you don’t have one of the nasties currently at your health center, you will certainly have a great chance of catching something if you go. and if you DO have a flu, even h1n1, there’s nothing really they can do for you other than the usual: plenty of fluids and rest.
keep in mind, too, that a fever is the body’s way of fighting off an infection: you don’t necessarily need to lower a fever with over-the-counter meds.
that said, if you have an underlying chronic medical condition OR you start having trouble breathing or spike a very high fever, head to the doctor’s ASAP. there’s crummy and then there’s *ill*.
hope you trip was fantastic! i haven’t been to china yet but would love to go.
Do symptoms show right away for swine flu? And can you get it from somebody who isn’t showing symptoms yet? My boyfriend is a server/bartender and we have a 6 month old baby girl, so I guess I’m a little worried about that. Thanx!
make sure he washes his hands and doesnt pick his nose while serving
Yes, I need it to evade some responsibility exploiting the swine flu paranoia. I need to get something fast and make it last for weeks. The thing is that I’m resistant, I never get ill. What could I try?
Question shows real character there, but I’m game…
How bout you jab yourself with a rusty knive covered in some form of droppings. If you’re lucky you could develop a nasty infection. That’ll keep you incapacitated for a few weeks.
I am coming down with the flu fast – hot/cold flushes, extremely exhausted, bad headache, aching all over really badly, running nose, getting a sore throat. I have been in touch with heaps of people – I travel on buses every day so you never know who has what! I also know I have been in touch with someone who had it but that was a week or so ago.
Am I over reacting?
I would get a mask and go to the doctors to be safe. And try not to get in populated areas. THats what i would do.
The swine flu sounds nasty, can anyone tell me what are the swine flu symptoms? And why is it called the swine flu?
Some of the symptoms of swine flu are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing.
There is a full list of the symptoms in the link below.
Before my menstrual cycle, I usually would get a headache, sleepy, and sometimes body aches, that would usually go away with the start of my period. Since the start of 2009, there has been at least 2 months, not including this month that I have had flu-like symptoms before my menstrual cycle, (sore throat, mild congestion, muscle aches). Is this normal?
Just another form of PMS. Take some meds
For the past few weeks there have been pigeons stuck in the attic space at my job. I can hear them scratching along the ceiling tiles. I have come down with sudden flu-like symptoms and I was wondering if this could be causing it. Thanks for your help.
Rats or mice are more likely to create this problem because they carry the Hunta Virus and that will cause those problems. You may find that the pigeons are not the only creatures lurking in the ceilings above you.
good luck
Just Wondering, apart from the obvious flu symptoms, are there any other serious symptoms? Thanks
Flu symptoms are fever, cough, congestion, sore throat. You have to have those symptoms to even be tested for it. Other symptoms of the flu (including the swine flu) are sore throat, red eyes, body aches, chills
